SDCC 201: Recap of Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite Panel

With the release of Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite set for September 19, Capcom and the Marvel team held a panel at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con. Moreover fans would get a look at how the team built this new unique universe.

According to the developers, it was important that the new installment would have a reason for the worlds to come together. For Marvel, one character that really stood out for his disdain of humans was Ultron. For Capcom, it was Mega Man X’s Sigma. Consequently, with the power of the Infinity Stones, they become Ultron Sigma.

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite

Infinity Stones

During the game’s development, Marvel liked the idea of the Infinity Stones that was first introduced in 1995’s Marvel Super Heroes. Of course, with Avengers: Infinity War coming in 2018, it’s a perfect tie-in, especially with the cast of characters announced set for Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite.

With Ultron Sigma in control of the Infinity Stones, he is able to warp reality and merges both the Capcom and Marvel universes. As can be seen, the game takes place after Ultron Sigma has already won. And he now rules over Xgard, a fusion of Thor’s Asgard and Mega Man X’s Abel City.

Other stages shown were:

  • Knowmoon: Fusion of Knowhere from Guardians of the Galaxy and The Third Moon from the Strider series
  • Valkanda: Fusion of Wakanda, ruled by T’Challa aka Black Panther, and Val Habar from the Monster Hunter series
  • A.I.M.brella: Fusion of the Advanced Idea Mechanics laboratory and the Umbrella Corporation from Resident Evil

Four New Characters

Four new characters were revealed a day before the panel at the Marvel Games panel at Comic-Con. Joining the game will be Spider-Man, Frank West of Dead Rising, Haggar of Final Fight, Nemesis of Resident Evil, and Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy. There was also the reveal of the Mind Stone, where it will quickly grab an opponent if players use it normally. And in full activation, it fills the hyper gauge in just a few seconds. Additionally, a new build of the game would be playable at the Capcom booth.

Truth to Roster Leaks

Based on the initial roster leaks for the game, it seems like they are gradually becoming vastly accurate. While Black Panther was already revealed as a DLC character, Capcom’s reveal of Valkanda means that the Monster Hunter’s Hunter character may be one of the next reveals.

Capcom also showed off two new videos: one focused on the development of the intro video where Ultron Sigma takes on the heroes, and the second takes place on Knowmoon, where X and Rocket Racoon are about to face off against Zero. In the game, the Grandmaster reprograms Zero. And in the new short clip, Zero refers to himself as Oblivion.

Marvel vs Capcom Comic Books

Marvel also announced that it will be releasing various covers in upcoming Marvel comic books. These will feature Marvel characters facing off against Capcom characters. It is the largest crossover collaboration to date. As a result, there will be 20 different comics and they will be released starting next month.

At the conclusion of the panel, one person ran up to ask a question about the game. Since the release of the demo, a lot of fans have complained about some of the character designs, including Chun-Li. This mysteriously familiar looking man asked if Capcom will be fixing Chun-Li’s face. (It was a great way to bring the issue out into the open.) At this instant, the Capcom developers said that Chun-Li’s face will have a cosmetic update via a day one patch.

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite will be available on September 19th for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
