Marvel’s New Warriors has found its Squirrel Girl with Milana Vayntrub

New Warriors Squirrel Girl Milana Vayntrub
As Marvel continues to expand its universe beyond the big screen, new characters from deep in the Marvel vaults are going to start making their debuts. The latest additions to the extended Marvel universe will be appearing in the new Freeform series, Marvel’s New Warriors. Just three months after being picked up to series, the show has cast Milana Vayntrub (This is Us) in the highly coveted role of Squirrel Girl and Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) as Mister Immortal. New Warriors follows these six superheroes as they try and harness their new abilities while also dealing with the everyday problems of young people.

As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, additional cast members include Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy (2 Broke Girls) as Microbe, and Kate Comer as Debrii.

The biggest casting of this group is by far Squirrel Girl. She’s a character with a small but devoted following that has seen interest from some high profile celebrities including Anna Kendrick. Parenthood alum Mae Whitman and Stranger Things favorite Shannon Purser were also strongly considered for the role.

But ultimately, the show went with Milana Vayntrub, who is almost surely best known for her role as the helpful AT&T employee who deals with a rotating cast of customers in the long-running national commercial campaign. Though her star has been ascendant as of late with her small but memorable turn as actress/playwright Sloane on NBC’s breakout hit, This is Us. This is Vayntrub’s biggest casting coup to date and will be sure to build on her growing fan base.

Showrunner Kevin Biegel said of the casting:

“I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It’ll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them.”

New Warriors will launch on Freeform sometime in 2018.
