Wonder Woman’s women-only screening causes outrage

Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is going to be a very big moment for female superheroes in cinema. The film has been receiving positive reactions from media outlets including us, and a lot of people are keeping a watchful eye. Will it break the curse of bad superheroine films like Catwoman, Elektra, and Supergirl? Moviegoers will soon find out once the film hits next month. However, there has been outrage at the Alamo Drafthouse due to a Wonder Woman’s women-only screening at its Texas location.

Alamo Drafthouse was really strict about not having men around for its June 6th screening. Women and those identifying as women are allowed. This also meant that the people working at the theater are going to be women.

“Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying ‘No Guys Allowed’ for one special night at the Alamo Ritz,” Alamo Drafthouse wrote on its website. “And when we say ‘Women (and People Who Identify As Women) Only,’ we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female.”

The women-only event sold out in hours, and in turn, a certain group had problems with the event. As a result, the company’s Facebook page and Twitter account are filled with outrage with the group boycotting and saying it’s promoting “misandry.”

One asked, “Have you ever hosted a men’s only showing of any film?”

“Very tacky Alamo,” added another. “I’m all for equality and having a screening specifically stating it is not inclusive to everyone, is against equality. I’m not saying Alamo did this intentionally, but it is still just wrong.”

Alamo Drafthouse Is Sticking to Its Guns

“Very sorry if you feel excluded,” the establishment replied to a moviegoer. “We thought it might be kinda fun — for one screening — to celebrate a character who’s meant a great deal to women for close to eight decades. Again, truly, truly, truly, truly sorry that we’ve offended you.”

There are those who are defending Alamo’s women-only screening of Wonder Woman. Here’s an example.

This one below is pretty funny.

Update: Alamo Drafthouse has released the following statement:

“Obviously, Alamo Drafthouse recognizes ‘Wonder Woman’ is a film for all audiences, but our special women-only screenings may have created confusion – we want everybody to see this film.”
