Free Comic Book Day 2017: What to expect & do to celebrate

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 6th, is officially Free Comic Book Day!

What is it exactly? It’s exactly what it sounds like – it’s a day where participating comic book shops across the US give away comic books FOR FREE. This provides fans the opportunity to read a comic book and hopefully, invest in some in the future.

Here are some things for you to know to prepare:

Some comic book stores don’t participate in this event. So, make sure you call the store you’d like to go to and confirm with them.

These comic books have been purchased and distributed by the comic book shops at their expense. When you get to the comic book shop, be sure to look around at the other comic books and purchase something. The comic book shops are doing us a favor by giving these out for free. Let’s show them some love as well.

The comic books offered come from a variety of studios including Marvel, DC, Boom! Studios, Titan Comics, Dark Horse, IDW, and many more. Yes, they are all free. This year, there will be fifty-two different comic books (each varying at each store) of your choosing. Some stores may offer a maximum amount, so please don’t be selfish and take all of them. If you’re not sure which ones you would like and you’re holding the line, please make sure you check out the descriptions of each comic book on the site. They even offer a preview of the comic on the site.

Also note, some of the comics won’t be full single stories. Some will be samplers of their upcoming titles, so please be aware of the difference. Be sure to help support the smaller, independent comic book studios as well! They do offer some great stories, such as Captain Canuck, 2000 AD, and Lady Mechanika.

To find the closest shop near you, click here. There will be some shops that make it into a big event filled with artists and writers to sign the comics. If you do decide to go to a signing, be sure to get there early because there will be lines.

Don’t forget to have fun and support your local comic book store!
