Michael Shannon frontrunner to play Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’

Michael Shannon - General Zod

Michael Shannon is the frontrunner but there are others still in the mix.

Several days ago, it was reported that David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) was the favorite to play Cable. Now, The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting that there is the new frontrunner: Michael Shannon. Previously, it was reported that Shannon was in the mix but scheduling conflicts forced him to drop out. The high-in-demand actor recently signed on for the indie film What They Had, a film that starts shooting this spring.

Those of you who are rooting for David Harbour shouldn’t worry because the “Stranger Things” star is still one of the actors on Fox’s shortlist.

Shannon is no stranger to comic book movies. He played General Zod in Man of Steel and Doc Cross Williams in Jonah Hex.

Nathan Summers is the son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor-Summers and is a powerful mutant telepath and a telekinetic user. Mister Sinister created Cable with the belief that he can control Cable and use him against his immortal enemy, Apocalypse. Unfortunately for Cable, Apocalypse infected him with the Techno-Organic Virus. Scott Summers sent him to the future to get treatment for the virus, and during his time in the future, he became a hardened soldier and gifted tactician.

Back in 2004, Marvel introduced the popular “Cable & Deadpool” series written by Fabian Nicieza. This comic book series is the primary inspiration for Cable appearing in Deadpool 2.

Whoever does inevitably take on the role of Nathan Summers, they will be joining Ryan Reynolds (reprising his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool) and Zazie Beets as Domino. John Wick‘s David Leitch is directing the movie.
