Is the Spider-Man franchise headed back to Marvel?

The Spider-Man franchise has been in the hands of Sony for quite some time. For some of you not up to speed, there was once a time when Marvel had filed for bankruptcy in the late 90s, early 2000s. In order to save the company, they sold off a major chunk of their franchises to different movie studio properties. One of those companies was Sony Pictures who have been making all of the Spider-Man movies since then.

Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s biggest comic book characters worldwide. In fact, he is the #1 most profitable character worldwide. However, it looks like the days of Sony Pictures holding on to the franchise and all of its characters could be coming to an end. Why do I say this? Well, it looks like the official Marvel Cinematic Universe page posted this cryptic looking message.

Sony is rumored to sell the full Spider-Man film rights back to Disney. This would include all characters and villains…

As the last sentence states, we all should take this message with a grain of salt. Sony Pictures has many other movies that they release every year, however, the Spider-Man franchise is most definitely their cash cow. I don’t believe that they will suddenly just decide to release the franchise back to Disney and Marvel; unless they laid down a reasonable price for Disney. I think Sony has put too much work into making the franchise movies popular again by working with Marvel to just sell it off right now.

In this crazy world we live in nowadays, anything is pretty much possible. Who knows? If Sony does decide to sell the franchise to Disney, does that mean we can finally see the Avengers take on some of Spider-Man’s many different nemeses?  Imagine if they had Venom and Carnage rampaging through the streets of New York City, wouldn’t it be an awesome battle if you saw the Hulk slugging it out with Venom or better yet, punching Carnage into the stratosphere?

Of course, we can speculate as much as we want, however until Disney or Marvel Studios releases a statement about this, all we can do is just sit and enjoy our favorite wall-crawler on the big screen. Let’s just hope that Spider-Man: Homecoming is super successful when it releases. Also, with his future appearances with the rest of the Marvel characters, this is probably going to keep him popular in this somewhat saturated comic book movie genre now.
