It seems like only yesterday that the Spider-Man series was rebooted with a different actor playing the web slinger. Andrew Garfield stepped in for Tobey Maguire for 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and after only three years it was announced that the series would be rebooted once again with yet another actor. A deal was reached between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures that would allow the character to fight alongside superheroes like Captain America and Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A deal that was great for fans but one that would leave Garfield out of the mix, a seemingly rough blow for the young actor. Seemingly.

Instead of sticking with Garfield to play Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, the studios looked for a younger, fresher face and found that in Tom Holland. In addition to losing his incredibly high-profile job and being replaced by a less experienced actor, apparently Garfield had always supported a deal that would allow Spider-Man to fight alongside the other heroes. You would think all this would infuriate the actor, but his response to Fandango regarding the situation suggests otherwise.

“You know what, it’s sliding doors, right?” he said. “There are so many possible outcomes; so many positives and potential downsides to that situation. If I am being totally honest, I am so excited Spider-Man is back in the hands of Marvel. I think that’s a really awesome move. It was a move that I’ve been advocating since I was offered the Spider-Man gig five or six years ago. I’m also excited for Tom Holland. I think he’s a very emotional, truthful, funny, physical actor, and I love the filmmaker — it all really couldn’t be in any better hands. I’m really stoked for it.”

Despite losing the gig, Garfield’s career is showing no signs of stagnation and, in fact, he should be incredibly proud of himself. Not only is he starring in high-profile actor/director Mel Gibson’s next film Hacksaw Ridge in a role that’s already receiving Oscar attention, but he’ll also star in Silence, another film getting award buzz, directed by Martin Scorsese, widely considered one of the greatest directors of all time. He may have lost Spider-Man, but Garfield’s definitely not struggling and may have missed out on these opportunities if he was still with Marvel.

“To be honest, I would not have been able to work with Mel Gibson and Martin Scorsese if I had done Spider-Man 3,” Garfield told Fandango. “I’m incredibly grateful that I get to now go and watch another man play Spider-Man who I think is a fantastic actor in Tom Holland.”

Talk about a win-win situation! Now we just have to see how all the movies turn out. Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7, 2017. Meanwhile, you can follow Garfield’s career in Hacksaw Ridge on November 4 and Silence on December 23 .
