Trailer for Seven Samurai’s Toshiro Mifune documentary released

Akira Kurosawa has directed prominent films like Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, and his work has inspired films like George Lucas’ Star Wars, Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars and John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven. Then there’s Toshiro Mifune, the actor who has starred in many of Kurosawa’s films. A new documentary, Mifune: The Last Samurai, is coming to select theaters, and a new trailer and poster have been released.

The documentary is directed by Academy Award winner Steven Okazaki and narrated by Keanu Reeves. It features interviews with Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Teruyo Nogami (Kurosawa’s longtime script supervisor), Kyoko Kagawa (Red Beard), Yoshio Tsuchiya (Seven Samurai), Takeshi Kato (Throne of Blood), Yoko Tsukasa (Yojimbo), and more.

Synopsis: MIFUNE: THE LAST SAMURAI, the new feature-length documentary by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Okazaki, explores the evolution of the samurai film; Mifune’s childhood and World War II experience; his accidental entry into the movies; and dynamic but sometimes turbulent collaboration with Kurosawa.

Mifune: The Last Samurai opens in theaters November 25, 2016, in New York (IFC Center), December 2nd in Los Angeles, and December 9th in San Francisco. A wider national release will be coming after.
