We can all go home now, it was just a false alarm! This past weekend, an Amazon.com France listing caused quite a stir among Game of Thrones fans not so patiently waiting for the new book ‘The Winds of Winter’ to be released. The Winds of Winter is to be the sixth book in the highly acclaimed fantasy series “A Song of Fire and Ice” by George R. R. Martin. In case you have been living under a rock, this series has also become an Emmy award-winning TV show on HBO which has surpassed the storyline in the books in anticipation for new material to adapt.

Still posted, the listing had the book release date as March 2017. Sometimes book distributors are privy to release dates ahead of the public leaving fans hoping that this error would give them some semblance of hope. In true George R. R. Martin fashion, that hope was crushed today as his publisher Random House came out and stated that the release date nor the completion of the story has yet to be determined. “As his publisher, we support George RR Martin as he works hard to finish The Winds of Winter. Any on-sale dates currently listed online for the novel are incorrect. Once we have a publication date for The Winds of Winter, the world will know.”

It’s no surprise that fans are so hungry for a new story. According to Wikipedia, Martin began writing the first novel, A Game of Thrones in 1991 which wasn’t published until 1996. The first three books came out in succession about two years apart. The last three have taken about 5 years to release leaving us nearly overdue for a new one. If you really want your fix, you can read chapters and excerpts from ‘The Winds of Winter’ on George R.R. Martin’s website here.
