It has just been announced that the Chinese Moon Rover has ceased all operations. The moon rover, Yutu, had been struggling with all sorts of problems from day one, where it was originally supposed to go into hibernation mode to protect itself from the extremely low temperatures. However, Yutu was unable to enter hibernation in time and unfortunately this caused damage to its electronics.

A month later, Yutu seemed to have gained a second life and began operating and collecting data once more. As great as this was, Yutu still was unable to move from its original spot on the Moon. Finally after a few months, Yutu gave one last farewell message to Sina Weibo, a popular Chinese social media website:

“The moon says it has prepared a long, long dream for me, and I’m wondering what the dream would be like – would I be a mars explorer, or be sent back to Earth?”

While there will not be a memorial service for Yutu, you can feel free to have a moment of silence, for this little rover that you probably never heard of before today. Farwell Yutu, we hope you are in a better place…..besides the same spot on the Moon where you are still stuck.
