Hands-on with Battle Chasers: Nightwar

Battle Chasers is a comic book series created by Joe Madureira in the ’90s. The last issue was released in 2001, leaving fans in the dust for over a decade. Now thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, Madureira is able to bring back the property… this time as a Japanese-style role-playing game titled Battle Chasers: Nightwar. If that’s not enough, new issues will also be released digitally to complement the game.

I had the chance to check out the game with Madureira during E3 2016, and it’s shaping up nicely. For those who aren’t familiar with the series, don’t worry, the game will be easily accessible for newcomers.

The demo build plays like a classic JRPG with an isometric view during exploration and a side view for turn-based combat. Players can switch between three different characters. The demo build had Garrison, Gully and Calibretto. Red Monika and others weren’t available yet.

During exploration, players can find treasure, discover dungeons, and encounter enemies. The dungeons will be randomly generated along with traps, puzzles, and secrets. Players can avoid some enemies, but where’s the fun in that? If they decide to take them on, they’ll be taken to the battle screen (see below).

Each character will have regular attacks and special moves complete with cinematic sequences. For example, Gully has a move where she can lift a giant rock from the ground and toss it at an enemy.

The demo mainly showcased the gameplay, so I wasn’t able to get a feel for the story.
