Scarlett Johansson reveals her favorite role

At last week’s School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) Gene Siskel Film Center Renaissance Award 2016 gala, Scarlett Johansson revealed her favorite role to Michigan Avenue. It’s a somewhat surprising choice considering she’s done some amazing work playing complex characters in great movies like Lost in Translation, Vicky Cristina BarcelonaUnder the Skin and Her. Nonetheless, Johansson still prefers her role as the superhero spy, Black Widow.

After being asked about her favorite role, the 31-year-old actress said, “It’s difficult! I really like playing Natasha; playing the Black Widow. It’s been an interesting journey, to take a character and grow it over these years, and peel the layers back and be able to, as you do in life, grow with this person. It’s a character that’s really enigmatic and has an amazing origins story, so there’s a lot for me to play off of.” She also commented on her cast, saying, “It’s not a bad company to be in.”

Johansson made her debut as the character who’s helped establish her as the highest-grossing actress of all time in 2010’s Iron Man 2. Altogether, she’s played the character in five films including The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War and will be reprising the role for the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.

When asked why audiences like that character so much, Johansson replied, “People like the puzzle pieces. It’s part of the fun of the Marvel franchise. They like to see these little pieces come together, and [discover] little references that they knew from the comics and stuff, so it’s fun. I like that.”

For those who also prefer her work in genre projects like the Marvel movies, you’ll see her next in the upcoming animated film, Sing, as well as the American adaptation of Ghost in the Shell which will be released in late 2016 and 2017 respectively.
