Star Trek Beyond reveals Mr. Sulu is gay

To reflect the changing and accepting times, Star Trek Beyond‘s John Cho revealed that his character Mr. Sulu is gay. He told the Herald Sun this week that Beyond’s writer and star Simon Pegg decided to write Mr. Sulu as a gay man as an homage to original series Sulu, George Takei.

Cho said, “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations.”

Takei, who has been out since 2005, had to keep his secret during his time on Star Trek and most of his career. Since then, Takei has been a huge advocate in the LGBT community and one of their most prominent voices. In the upcoming film, we will meet Sulu’s daughter and partner.

Star Trek Beyond opens in theaters everywhere on July 22, 2016.
