Production I.G. Panel at AX2016

This year’s Production I.G. panel started off with excitement as they screened trailers for all new seasons of anime, including Haikyu!! Karasuno Koukou VS Shiratorizawa Gakuen Kouko (Haikyu!! Karasuno High vs Shiratorizawa Academy), Kuroko no Basuke: Kage to Hikari (Kuroko’s Basketball: Shadow and Light), and Perfect Bones.

The panel’s usual host at anime expo, Maki Terashima-Furuta, revealed FLCL special guests in attendance, who would return for the FLCL panel right after this one. Kazuya Tsurumaki (director and supervisor of FLCL), Mayumi Shintani (voice of Haruko), and Jason DeMarco (producer at Adult Swim) will be guest speakers at the FLCL panel.

Ari Arad and Maki Terushima-Furuta

The main focus of this year’s Production I.G. panel, however, was Ghost in the Shell! Special guest, Producer Ari Arad of Ghost in the Shell Live Action, was brought in to speak on the film and progress. Both he and Terushima-Furuta opened up the floor to questions by fans afterwards. Of course, as many attendees present know, the first question of the Q&A session ended up being in regards to why Scarlett Johansson was cast as Motoko Kusanagi, and not an Asian actress. Both Arad and Terushima-Furuta graciously accepted the controversial question, revealing the tidbit that director Mamoru Oshii is actually a big fan of Scarlett Johansson. Well, that’s a pretty good reason.

In addition, she announced the opening of an I.G. Store located just 2 minutes away from Shibuya’s infamous crosswalk. The store opened just 3 months ago in April 2016, and you can get fitted with a Virtual Reality headset for the chance to experience their GITS VR!

Other announcements from I.G. USA, includes: licensing of Miss Hokusai, and licensing of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence by FUNimation.
