Canada PM Justin Trudeau: Marvel’s newest comic book superhero?

It looks like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could add a new job to his resume – comic book hero. Trudeau will grace the variant cover of the No. 5 issue of Marvel’s Civil War II: Choosing Sides, due out on August 31st. The young prime minister is seen with his signature smile in the boxing ring representing Canada wearing a Maple Leaf flag tank, black shorts, and red boxing gloves. Standing behind him are Canadian superheroes of Alpha Flight – Puck, Sasquatch, and Aurora. In the dark, we can see Iron Man with his arms crossed.

Trudeau isn’t the first Canadian prime minister to be featured in a comic book. His late father Pierre Trudeau, who was prime minister from 1968 to 1984, was featured in 1979’s Volume 120 of The Uncanny X-Men.

Canadian artist and writer Chip Zdarsky wrote the Alpha Fight story, which is based in Canada, and knew he wanted to include Trudeau. Zdarsky told the Canadian press, “I kind of figured to do a story about Canada right now and not take that opportunity to put Trudeau in seemed like a waste. He seems to be the popular culture association with Canada right now, right behind (singer/rapper) Drake — and I probably couldn’t get Drake in the comic.” With the Prime Minister’s Office approval, but not endorsed, Zdarsky proceeded to write the story to include Trudeau. He doesn’t play a superhero, but the team in Alpha Fight decide to seek out Trudeau for advice.

Don’t think this is just a walk-on role for Trudeau. Zdarsky has more plans for him. “I didn’t want this to just be like a walk-on … rescued by superheroes and he thanks them and that’s the end of the story,” Zdarsky said. “I think a lot of these real-life appearances in comics tend to go that way. I liked the idea of him actually engaging them in an ethical debate. It’s a little tricky just because once you start to put words in the prime minister’s mouth, we acknowledge that this is basically Trudeau fan fiction.”

Marvel’s Civil War II: Choosing Sides can be pre-ordered at your local comic book store or online at Marvel’s Digital Store.
