Drive, Neon Demon’s Nicolas Winding Refn wants to direct Batgirl film

With movies like Drive, Bronson and the recently released The Neon Demon on his resume, director Nicolas Winding Refn is probably the last person you’d expect to direct a superhero movie considering his unorthodox style and penchant for graphic violence. However, stranger things have happened.

After the release of Drive in 2011, Refn expressed his desire to direct a Wonder Woman film. It looks like that won’t happen any time soon as Wonder Woman, which will be released next year, already has Patty Jenkins directing. Refn still wants to direct a superhero film, though.

“God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun,” Refn told Business Insider this week. “I just don’t know when it’s going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity.”

Not only does he want to direct a superhero film, he has an idea about which film this would be.

“What ones are left?” Refn pondered for a second. “You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”

There’s no Batgirl film scheduled, but the character will reportedly be featured in the Harley Quinn movie that is set to come out after Suicide Squad.

Although the director’s films are a mixed bag, considering the critically lauded Drive and the panned Only God Forgives, it’s hard to argue against his bold, unique and ambitious sensibilities as an artist. A Refn-directed superhero film may not please everyone, but there’s no doubt it would be a memorable experience.
