Not much was known about Forest Whitaker’s character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story… until now. It has been revealed today (via EW) that his character is Saw Gerrera. If you’ve watched the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, then you should be familiar with the character.

The rebel fighter with extreme tactics first appeared in the fifth season of The Clone Wars. At that time he was a young man who fought against the droid army of the Separatists who was controlling his homeworld of Onderon. He had support and training from Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano. It should be interesting to see if he knows about Anakin turning to the dark side and how their relationship will affect the film.

By looking at the image above, the older and younger versions are different including eye color, eyebrow scar, and hairstyle. However, Whitaker’s version does have a scar above the left eyebrow.

The character is one of the good guys, but he does make the Rebel Alliance nervous.

“Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy tells EW. “He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”

The character was mentioned in Star Wars Rebels and the Star Wars novel, Bloodline, which is set between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

So why use Saw? Lucasfilm wanted to show how desperate the Rebel is by using all the help they can get to destroy the Death Star.

“The Death Star is the event that sort of pulls everybody into a place of unity, and prior to that it’s a little bit more divided. Who are at the different ends of that spectrum?” says Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm’s head of story development.
