The Lego Movie sequel has been delayed

Although a film about toy building blocks had many moviegoers skeptical, there’s no doubt that the sequel to the surprise smash hit The Lego Movie is one of the most anticipated motion pictures of the near future. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a little longer than they expected for The Lego Movie Sequel. Its initial release date of May 18, 2018 has been changed to February 8, 2019. That’s almost five years since the debut of the original film.

There’s no word yet as to why the the film has been delayed, but it is among several upcoming Warner Bros. features that are also getting release date changes. These include Geostorm, which will move from January 13, 2017 to October 20, 2017, Bastards, which will move from November 4, 2016 to January 27, 2017 and Ben Affleck’s film Live By Night,  which will move from October 20, 2017 to January 13, 2017.

The Lego Movie Sequel will be directed by comedy writer Rob Schrab in his directorial debut. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the original, are moving on to direct the upcoming Han Solo film starring Alden Ehrenreich.

It’s not all bad new for fans of the series, however. The Lego Batman Movie will debut on February 10, 2017 and will feature many Batman favorites including Robin (Michael Cera), Batgirl (Rosario Dawson), Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) and The Joker (Zach Galifianakis).
