Volition announces development of new game: Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M

It’s been a little while since we last heard from Red Faction and Saints Row developer Volition. Last we saw was Saints Row IV three years ago and its balls-to-the-wall, pure fun attitude along with its 2015 expansion Gat Out of Hell. Now, after a years lull Volition has announced a new game: Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M.

Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M looks to be Volition’s take on the comic book superhero genre, specifically that of the Marvel universe with its opposing agencies of M.A.Y.H.E.M  (Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds) and L.E.G.I.O.N (League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations), both being takes on S.H.I.E.L.D and HYDRA.

The game is set in a futuristic Seoul, with the kind comic open world gameplay that Volition has become known for. You’ll be playing as a number of different M.A.Y.H.E.M  team members throughout the game with the ability to swap in between each of them. So far three have been shown publicly: Fortune, a Brazilian close combat specialist with akimbo energy pistols and and an attack droid. Hardtack is a U.S. Sailor who is both a mountain of a man and carries a giant harpoon for skewing enemies like whales (his first name is Ishmael so he’s a walking Moby Dick reference). Hollywood is the team’s assault specialist who also happens to be an actor with his own reality show. Like the characters of Saints Row, the team members are definite anti-heroes with their tendency to not be completely serious about a situation and the fact that they often end up causing as much damage as the villains they’re fighting against.

Like all the other games made by Volition, this one shares the same universe as Saints Row and Red Faction as seen by the common link of the Ultor Corporation who may make an appearance in this game as well. A more direct link in this case is that Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M is likely a direct sequel to Saints Row IV and Gat Out of Hell due to the bit at the end of the trailer where a large stylized purple Fleur-De-Lis (Being the logo of the 3rd Street Saints) is seen at M.A.Y.H.E.M HQ.

The game is due sometime in 2017 but until then Volition and publisher Deep Silver will likely be showing off the game at E3 2016. Until then, take a look at the announcement trailer. I’m sure you’ll find it a blast.
