Emily Blunt to play Mary Poppins in new Disney sequel

Emily Blunt / Into the Woods

Disney has announced that the 1964 classic film musical, Mary Poppins, will be getting a sequel starring Emily Blunt (Into the Woods, Edge of Tomorrow) and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the singer, songwriter, and star of the mega-popular Broadway show, Hamilton.

Blunt will be playing Mary Poppins and Miranda will be playing a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack. The story will be based on one of many P.L. Travers’ books and will be set in Depression-era London, with Jane and Michael Banks as adults. Michael now has three children, and after a personal loss, Mary Poppins and Jack show up to help bring back happiness in their lives.

Rob Marshall will be directing. He has worked with Blunt before with another Disney live-action film musical, Into the Woods. The screenplay will be written by David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers. Marc Shaiman will be composing an all-new score with Scott Wittman writing original songs.

The classic 1964 movie was directed by Robert Stevenson and starred Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dyke.

Mary Poppins Returns will hit theaters on December 25, 2018.
