Captain America: Steve Rogers #1’s twist ending causes fan outrage
Wow, Captain America can’t seem to catch a break recently on Twitter. First we have the #GiveCaptainAmericaaBoyfriend campaign that was trending yesterday, a movement that wants to turn Captain America gay or bi, and now we have a new causing controversy with Cap’s origin story.
Here’s a little refresher on what’s happening to Steve Rogers in the comic book world. He has lost his powers and has aged into an old man. Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, has filled in his shoes to become the new Captain America.
Major Spoilers Ahead
Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 has been released today, and it has a doozy of a cliffhanger ending. Steve Rogers reveals that he is actually an undercover operative working for HYDRA. Yes, the man who fought against HYDRA and the Red Skull is actually in cahoots with them. And if you’re thinking this isn’t the real Steve Rogers, then you’re in for some bad news. Writer Nick Spencer and Marvel editor Tom Brevoort reveal to EW that this is the actual Rogers, and he isn’t under some mind control or isn’t a clone.
“Well, No. 2 rolls back the clock a little bit to further illuminate where Steve’s head is at and how he got this way,” said Brevoort. “And from there, the story will get larger over the course of time than you probably imagine that it can.
“Issue 2 will lay a lot of our cards on the table in terms of what the new status quo is, but the one thing we can say unequivocally is: This is not a clone, not an imposter, not mind control, not someone else acting through Steve,” reveals Spencer. “This really is Steve Rogers, Captain America himself.”
The man who fights for justice and freedom is a fraud. Fans who look up to Captain America have expressed their anger and have been using a new hashtag.
