Shenmue and Shenmue II to get HD versions?

In a recent #AskSega in a Sega of Europe video, one fan asked if Sega had any plans to release both Shenmue and Shenmue 2 for current generation consoles in a high-definition re-release. The response was pretty favorable. Sega community manager Dan Sheridan mentioned that Sega is interested in releasing these two titles, but there are some hurdles that come with releasing a game made back in the early 2000s which usually revolves around licensing issues.

“Of course, we would love to release these tomorrow,” said Dan Sheridan in the video. “Sadly, it’s not as simple as porting the games to current platforms, as we would need to ensure that any HD remaster lived up to the quality of the original titles. And with games as immersive as Shenmue 1 and 2, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.”

It may not be something that’s going to happen soon, but as it stands, there is a good chance based on Sega being able to renegotiate some older deals. We’ve seen this with the Mega Man Legends/Misadventures of Tron Bonne. Ot’s great news to know it’s on Sega’s radar.

With Shenmue III coming in late 2017/Early 2018, it will just make enjoying the series that much better.
