Razer BlackWidow X Chroma review – Quality and performance at a great price

Sometimes less is more, and Razer proves just that with its latest gaming keyboard the BlackWidow X Chroma. It is aimed towards gamers who are looking to step up their games and bring out their unique style. While the Chroma does lack a few options that many manufacturers add to create the ultimate everyday use, it still stands tall thanks to a number of customizable options, a smaller yet simpler design that removes unnecessary buttons, a metal top plate, and a cable routing system that works with your gaming set up.

At first glance, there’s nothing special going on for the BlackWidow X Chroma. It looks simplistic with an exposed metal frame offering what looks to the bare necessity for your gaming needs. Razer boasts a lifespan of up to 80 million keystrokes, and the design of both the plastic caps and plastic housing will help protect your keyboard from those unintended accidents which have led to many keyboards ending up in the trash.

While Razer offers the BlackWidow X Chroma with the option of selecting either orange switches or green switches, we tested the green switch model which was very responsive and yet very noisy. The green switches are very responsive and will get the job done, but it doesn’t exactly stand up to the quality and response of the Cherry MX switches. You’re in luck, however, as Razer will be offering Cherry MX Blue in their models, so that’s a bigger plus.

Now let’s get into the heart of the keyboard.

To take full advantage of all of the Razer BlackWidow X Chroma functions, you will need to download the Razer Synapse software. The program is very easy to navigate and gives gamers full control of everything from their gaming to the color configuration of each key as they desire which is a definite plus.

Users can manage and create an almost infinite amount of profiles that fits their all of your individual gaming needs, so no matter if you are playing a MOBA or FPS, you are able to take full advantage by creating your own macro keys. (These can be bound to a single key and can be activated with function commands or bound to specific games.) You also won’t need to worry about accidently pressing the Windows Key, Alt + Tab or Alt + F4 command by turning on the “Gaming mode” which disables these options.

While it’s not a huge necessity, the ability to fully customize your keyboard is a nice option. Razer BlackWidow X Chroma features full RGB illumination. Each key can be set to a different color using the Synapse software. You can program a variety of different color settings, or if none of that matters, just choose a color that suits you. While I spent a few hours creating a few different settings, I found it easier and worthwhile to download other people’s shared creations and found myself using a really awesome League of Legends-themed one that cycles through different colors every few seconds.

Final Reaction

Razer’s BlackWidow X Chroma proves that great things come in small packages. For the first few weeks, I had an issue in terms of comfort when it came to the low-profile metal design and louder than-normal-green switches. Now, it’s become my go-to keyboard for my everyday use and has really helped me step up in MOBAs and FPS games. It’s something any gamer looking to upgrade to a new Razer keyboard should check out. It offers so much, is made to last, and has an affordable price that rivals many of its competitors.
