David Ayer and Margot Robbie justify Harley Quinn’s sexy outfit in Suicide Squad

Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn in the upcoming Suicide Squad film by director David Ayer. The version is a sexy take on the iconic DC villain as she wears hot pants and a tiny and tight shirt. There were some fans who didn’t like the outfit because they don’t like a sexy version of Harley. In an interview with The New York Times, Robbie and Ayer defend the choice of wardrobe.

Robbie says that Harley is “wearing hot pants because they’re sparkly and fun,” and it’s not because she wants “guys to look at her ass.”

She continued, “As Margot, no, I don’t like wearing that. I’m eating burgers at lunchtime, and then you go do a scene where you’re hosed down and soaking wet in a white T-shirt, it’s so clingy and you’re self-conscious about it.”

Ayer talks about how other ideas for outfits wouldn’t work. “I didn’t think denim overalls would be appropriate for that character,” he said. Robbie understood that her look is “part of the iconography.”

Will she be wearing hot pants if there’s a sequel?

“I’m not wearing hot pants next time,” Robbie joked.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 8, 2016.
