Marvel Studios responds to Doctor Strange’s Ancient One casting controversy

News of Tilda Swinton playing The Ancient One was known since last year, but with the new Doctor Strange teaser trailer being released this month, people are in an uproar. Swinton and writer C. Robert Cargill defended Marvel’s decision on casting a white actress to play the character, and now Marvel Studios itself has released a statement (via Mashable) about the controversy.

“Marvel has a very strong record of diversity in its casting of films and regularly departs from stereotypes and source material to bring its MCU to life. The Ancient One is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic. We are very proud to have the enormously talented Tilda Swinton portray this unique and complex character alongside our richly diverse cast.”

This was pretty much the same response given by Cargill about how they didn’t want to portray a racial stereotype, and Feige has mentioned before that the Ancient One is a title that a few can hold.

Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4, 2016.
