CinemaCon 2016: ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ trailer description

X-Men: Apocalypse is shaping up to be quite an epic showdown between the X-Men and Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen. However, the recent trailers have given us nothing in terms of Apocalypse‘s storyline. Fox presented an extended look at X-Men: Apocalypse featuring some very interesting tidbits about the film’s storyline.

The trailer opens with Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) warning Professor X (James McAvoy) about the impending danger of Apocalypse. “Just because we’re not at war doesn’t mean we’re at peace,” she tells him. We see Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) lying on a table in Ancient Egypt turning into the blue demon that we see today. In the strangest twist of the film, we see Professor X getting beat up and taken by Apocalypse.

The film looks to focus heavily on Mystique as we find out that she’s there to help recruit and train the X-Men. “The world needs the X-Men,” as Beast (Nicholas Hoult) tells Mystique. We see her rescuing a young Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) from a cage fight with Angel and there is also a comical scene where Quicksilver (Evan Peters) tells Mystique that Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is his father. One can only assume that the team she’s assembling is the team that’s tasked to save Professor X from Apocalypse. As she says in the trailers, “you’re not students anymore, you’re X-Men!”

We also find out why Magneto has chosen to join forces with Apocalypse. Professor X tells Magneto not to do this and how he isn’t the man that he once knew. “Whatever it is you think you saw in me, I buried it with my family,” he said. It’s unclear whether he’s talking about his family during the Holocaust or a family that he found in the 10 years set in between Days of Future Past and Apocalypse. Whatever the case may be, Magneto is alone and without hope. Apocalypse seems to exploit this vulnerability in order to get Magneto to join him.

The extended look concludes with some amazing fight scenes featuring Psylocke (Olivia Munn) vs. Beast and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) vs. Storm (Alexandra Shipp).

Overall, the extended look seems to be a combination of both the trailers that were released previously. Obviously, the biggest difference is the revelation of the film’s diversion from comic books. This is a major change in Mystique’s personality and it speaks to the popularity of Jennifer Lawrence. If Fox decides to change the status quo for the team then we might see more of Jennifer Lawrence in the X-Men universe.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto, to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven with the help of Professor X must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
