Fallout 4 Automatron (DLC expansion review)

automatron

For those who haven’t quite gotten their fill of Fallout 4, Bethesda Softworks has just launched the first of their three planned DLC expansions, Automatron. By taking some of the most enjoyable parts of the game (at least for some) in the form of crafting, companions, and customization, the developer has created a thrilling new system that is sure to please anyone who has spent some time in the Commonwealth Wastelands.

In Automatron, your Lone Wanderer now has the ability to craft AI robots as companions who can assist you in your travels through the ruins of Boston. This acts much like an upgrade to the existing Power Armor crafting system. You rummage for various materials, go back to base to create or upgrade you new robot friend, and then take him with you to find more materials to craft with. Lather, rinse, repeat, and you’ll eventually create an uber-mech with all manner of shielding and advanced weaponry.

The fun droid-building game is wrapped around an all-too-short campaign that shouldn’t take an experienced player more than a few hours to beat. In this story mode, you befriend a lone robot, Ada, who has lost her traveling companions, and assist her in defeating the Mechanist, a big bad that appears to be responsible for the recent robot violence in the wasteland. The story is about as straightforward as it gets and serves mainly as a means to give you more chances to find robot building materials.

Ultimately, Automatron gives Fallout 4 some new legs and a fun new system to work with. Expect to finish the whole campaign in a few evening play sessions. As for how much more enjoyment you’ll get out of this expansion, it depends much less on your interest in the Fallout story, and much more in your desire to tinker with robots.
