Is Sony developing PlayStation 4.5 for 4K gaming?

You probably did a double-take at the headline of this article. Not to worry, I did the same.

Sources have told Kotaku that Sony is planning on a higher-end model of PlayStation 4 with more graphical power and the ability to run games at 4K resolution. In case you didn’t know, 4K is four times the resolution of 1080p and the PS4 already displays 4K video and pictures. Running video games at 4K is a completely different story, however.

This increase in power will also help developers make virtual reality games for PlayStation VR, which has recently been priced at $399 and is set to release in October. It is unknown if the name “PlayStation 4.5” is the official title or just what developers have been calling it.

Kotaku reached out to Sony, but a spokesperson replied, “We can’t comment on rumors or speculation.”

Apparently during Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week, there were also meetings held with developers explaining how the hardware would work.
There isn’t much to go on for this rumor, but we will keep you posted as the story develops.
