Warner Bros. moves ‘Ready Player One’ to avoid ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’

Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One has shifted its release date to avoid competition from a little-known movie called Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Earlier this month, Disney announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII would now come out on December 15, 2017, the same release date as Ready Player One. Instead of competing against Episode VIII and essentially committing financial suicide, Ready Player One will now release on March 30, 2018.

Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn are the only actors to be cast in the film so far.

Set in the virtual world of “Oasis,” a teenager finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless enemies after the game’s founder dies and offers his fortune as his grand prize.

Ready Player One games in theaters on March 30, 2018.
