X-Men spin-off, Legion, casts Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza and Jean Smart

Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza and Jean Smart legion

A new X-Men spin-off is in the works, and FX and Marvel have announced that Dan Stevens (The Guest), Aubrey Plaza (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Jean Smart (Fargo) will be joining the pilot.

Stevens will be playing Professor X’s son, David, who’s based on the comic book character, Legion. He’s described as:

“Diagnosed as schizophrenic at a young age, David is a haunted man, trying to find his way back to sanity, but he’s getting tired and is about to give up when he meets the girl of his dreams.”

Plaza will be playing Lenny, David’s friend. She has a history of abusing drugs and alcohol and hopes that her life will get better.

Jean Smart will be playing Melanie, a therapist who uses unconventional methods and has a keen mind.

The actors will join Rachel Keller, who is playing Syd.

Legion was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bill Sienkiewicz. He made his comic book debut in New Mutants #25 (March 1985).

“It’s conceived more as a standalone,” executive producer Noah Hawley said before about how the show connects with the X-Men films. “I don’t want to say too much more about it on that level, but certainly it’s not constructed as a back-door anything. It’s more just that there’s a story that I want to explore that has to fit into that larger universe, which is exciting.”

Hawley (Fargo, Bones) will write the pilot episode and joins Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Bryan Singer (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Star Wars Rebels), Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Daredevil), Jim Chory (Marvel’s Daredevil), and John Cameron (Fargo) as an executive producer.

FX Productions and Marvel Television will be producing the pilot with FXP taking care of physical production.

Production begins in March.
