Tom Welling on the possibility of playing Superman in CBS’ Supergirl

Superman has made an appearance in CBS’ Supergirl, but that doesn’t mean we know who the actor is. That’s because the showrunners have figured out clever ways to introduce the Man of Steel without actually having to show him. One example has Kara, aka Supergirl, receiving text messages from Clark Kent and another has her getting knocked out and seeing a blurry Superman saving her. I get that the show doesn’t want to introduce him outright because he would take the limelight away from Supergirl.

We know that Daniel DiMaggio will be portraying a younger Clark Kent in the 13th episode called “For the Girl Who Has Everything,” but nothing is known about the actor for the older version.

Even if the show has been trying to sprinkle Superman’s appearances, it still hasn’t stopped many fans from wanting a proper Superman appearance. Tom Welling, who played Clark Kent in Smallville, has shared his thoughts on the idea of playing Superman on Supergirl.

“There’s people who would like it,” he told Buzz Feed writer Jarett Wieselman. “There’s people who don’t like it, but I will tell you that no one has ever asked me to do it. So, I don’t know. It would be kind of odd. I don’t know who he is at that point.”

Supergirl has featured two actors from previous Superman projects. We have Helen Slater, who starred as Supergirl in the 1984 Supergirl movie, playing Kara’s adoptive mother. Then we have Dean Cain, who played Superman in the ’90s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, playing Kara’s adoptive father. Perhaps Welling can play another character.

Supergirl airs Monday’s at 8pm PT/ET on CBS.
