EVO 2016 lineup and location announced
Evolution Championship Series 2016 will be bigger than ever. Evo organizer Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar joined Mike Ross to make a few announcements on what fans can expect this year. This includes new venue locations, date and the names of the nine titles that will be the main attractions this year.
Evo 2016 will take place on July 15-17 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, allowing an even bigger audience to attend on Friday and Saturday. The finals on Sunday, however, will happen live at the Mandalay Bay sports arena and will feature five of the nine games.Let’s take a look at the nine games announced.
Let’s take a look at the nine games announced.
Returning titles:
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
- Mortal Kombat X
- Killer Instinct
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
New titles:
- Street Fighter V
- Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-
- Tekken 7 Fated Retribution
- Pokkén Tournament
Both Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Melee were both expected to return this year due to popular demand, but a big surprise came in the form of a third Nintendo exclusive game Pokkén Tournament. While the game is out in Japanese arcade right now (and for a short time at locations like Round 1 and Dave & Busters), it will see a release in March giving players a few months to prepare.
With Capcom focusing on Street Fighter V in a big way this year, Ultra Street Fighter IV will no longer be on the card. It is sad just because of all the great moments, but hopefully, SFV will be just as great. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will also be back. It’s not a surprise to see it included once again since you never know what is going to happen, including last year where Kane Blue River surprisingly took 1st place.
Guilty Gear Xrd and Tekken 7 both appeared last year. Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- and Tekken 7: Fated Retribution are updated entries into the series featuring new characters that are not in the original like Street Fighter‘s Akuma in Tekken 7: Fated Retribution. After a match between Mark “MarkMan” Julio and Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar, we also learned that Nina Williams will be a new addition to the roster.
Mortal Kombat X and Killer Instinct are both about to enter their third season. That means new characters and more improvements to the game.
This year’s Evo looks to be even more exciting than last year. Tickets won’t be available for purchase for a little while; however, tickets for the LVCC and Mandalay Bay Sport Arena will be sold separately which you can find more information at the Evo website.
