Alan Rickman has passed away at the age of 69 from a battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his family on Thursday, who said that he was “surrounded by family and friends” in London.

The British actor was best known for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films and as Hans Gruber in Die Hard. He’s also known for playing Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991’s Robin Hood and voicing Marvin in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has praised Rickman for how he treated him.

“Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I’ve ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I’m pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn’t have to do that. I know other people who’ve been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say ‘if you call Alan, it doesn’t matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he’s doing, he’ll get back to you within a day.'”

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling expressed her feelings:

Michael Gambon, who played Dumbledore, told Shaun Ley on Radio 4’s World At One that “[Rickman] was always happy and fun and creative. I could never be with him in Harry Potter and keep a straight face. Alan was just brilliant. It’s a terrible shock.”

Rickman has upcoming movies including Eye in the Sky, a military movie about drones, and Alice Through the Looking Glass, where he returns to voice Blue Caterpillar.

RIP, Alan Rickman.

And with that, I leave you with this funny video of Rickman inhaling helium and speaking with a squeaky voice with Jimmy Fallon.
