Stormtrooper TR-8R’s backstory revealed

TR-8R-SW7

One of the surprise hit characters of the new Star Wars was TR-8R, the Stormtrooper who squares off with Finn in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Almost overnight the faceless trooper became an internet sensation and has been featured on countless memes. Recently, Lucasfilm revealed that the character has a connected past to Finn.

Released on the same day as the movie, the book Before the Awakening by Greg Rucka was released. The book contains three stories that give fans a little more backstory into Rey, Poe, and Finn. In Finn’s story, the book delves into the squad he trained with prior to the events of the film. One of the troopers in Finn’s squad is FN-2199, Finn’s number was FN-2187.  FN-2199 is given the nickname “Nines” and Nines along with Finn are paired with “Zero” and “Slip” during their training.

Slip is actually the stormtrooper we see die and smear blood across Finn’s helmet in The Force Awakens opening scene and Nines is TR-8R. The knowledge gives a little more backstory to infamous scene where TR-8R calls Finn a traitor. Lucasfilm also revealed that Nines is part of an elite group in charge of riot control, which is why he wields the Z6 baton.

Having this information now makes that scene mean so much more. I only wished I knew this information prior to seeing the film. One thing that is also cool about this is that it does confirm that everything Star Wars related moving forward is canon. All thanks to Disney forming the Star Wars Story Group. It should be interesting to see if there are other books or comics released between now and the next film that may hint at plot lines in Episode VIII. Even Lucasfilm suggest that we may have not seen the last of TR-8R.
