Galavant season two: Expect more singing and ludicrousy

GALAVANT - "Aw, Hell, the King" - Desperate to raise an army and storm Hortensia, Galavant and King Richard return to his former castle to find the village thriving, now that they've found democracy. The discovery leads Richard to have an identity crisis now that his people don't need him. Galavant uses a town hall meeting to recruit fighters from the village, but the volunteers are in short supply. In Hortensia, an evil wedding planner named Wormwood poisons Isabella's mind with an enchanted tiara, intent on making her help him take over the kingdom. Meanwhile, Madalena threatens Sid with death unless he helps Gareth overcome his guilt-ridden nightmares about betraying Richard on "Galavant," airing SUNDAY, JANUARY 10 (8:00--8:30 p.m. EST) on the ABC Television Network. ABC’s hit winter musical Galavant is back for its sophomore season with more music, more dancing, more guest stars, and more randomness. We last left our hero Galavant on a pirate ship with King Richard after escaping the clutches of King Kingsley, who was eventually killed by Queen Madalena with Gareth by her side. Princess Isabella was locked in her fairytale room doomed to be married to her 11-year old cousin. Sid was nowhere to be found and stuck in Madalena’s castle. In this season, we find Galavant and King Richard teaming up to save Galavant’s one true love Isabella and for King Richard to reclaim his throne from his evil ex-wife.

After reviewing the screeners for the upcoming episode, the show is exactly how we left it – musical comedy gold. The reason Galavant did so well the first season was because it made fun of the fairytale romances and musicals where true love always wins. We live in a realistic world where love is hard, everyone isn’t always happy, and it takes a long time to save a princess. The show has continued that trend, but this time King Richard (Timothy Omundson) is on the hero’s side. We learn King Richard isn’t a “bad guy”, just a lovable doofus who happened to end up ruling the kingdom. Omundson is simply perfect for this role and makes even King Richard’s annoying traits into something adorable. Seriously, King Richard is adorable. As for Galavant and Isabella, after their kiss, the couple is left wondering about their relationship – especially their awkward first kiss – and the trouble they go through to try to reach each other. We finally find out what happened to Sid and his new future working for the evil Queen.

There are just so many stories and songs, you’ll be left singing along. Yes, I did rhyme on purpose.

As for the music, award-winning duo Alan Menken and Glenn Slater have not disappointed us yet. Even the opening number, “A New Season,” is catchier than the original opener. The music throughout the season has the Broadway musical feel but with hilarious lyrics that fit the moment.

What more can we expect?

Lots of special guests and some you may not even recognize unless you REALLY looked. I don’t want to spill any spoilers, but many British actors show up in this. British actors, we love! We already know Kylie Minogue will be lending her voice in an episode – and what a gorgeous voice it is.

The writing itself is pretty funny. There are so many ridiculous storylines that just worked for this show – “dwarf vs giants”, miscommunication through magic, potential new relationships, and a unicorn finding those who are pure. These ten episodes are sure to keep you entertained and the music stuck in your head.

Galavant second season returns January 3rd on ABC.
