J.J. Abrams wants Selma’s Ava DuVernay to direct a Star Wars film

Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to produce many Star Wars films after Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This gives more directors an opportunity to get their stamp on the franchise like J.J. Abrams (The Force Awakens), Rian Johnson (Star Wars: Episode VIII), and Gareth Edwards (Star Wars: Rogue One). It’s definitely a franchise with no female directors, and recent reports seem to indicate that Lucasfilm wants more women working on the films. In a recent interview with Nerdist, Abrams expressed that he would like to see Selma director Ava DuVernay added to that list.

Abrams was asked which female director he would like to see take on a Star Wars project, and his “kneejerk reaction” was to see DuVernay behind the camera. He said that she would be a good choice since she has a passion for making genre films. Marvel Studios did want her to direct the Black Panther film. (She passed on that project due to creative differences.)

The LA Times reported that a Star Wars casting agent was setting up meetings for four female directors and three female writers to work on a future Star Wars film.

What kind of Star Wars film would you like to see DuVernay direct? Let us know in the comments section!
