Gegege no Kitaro Manga creator passes away at 93

You may not know who Shigeru Mizuki is, but you’ve probably seen hints of his influence in many modern titles.

On November 11th, Kitaro fell and injured his head and since then was hosptialized. Sadly, he passed away of a heart failure yesterday as reported by the Japan Times.

Mizuki began his manga career after World War II. Through his experiences, it helped him create Gegege no Kitaro, a manga about Japanese folklore spirits known as yokai. The series has been popular for nearly 40 years and a new adaptation had aired every decade since 1968. His works has also been immortalized in the form of a museum next to a street in Sakaiminato known as “Mizuki Shigeru Road”. Even an autobiography, Gegege no Nyoubou, was adapted into a live-action drama in 2010.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Shigeru. The manga world will miss you.
