Do you want to go to Mars?

Oh hey there, just your local astrophysicist in training letting you know that you can go to Mars. Well, sort of. Starting December 14th, NASA will be accepting applications from those of you who are interested in going to Mars. If you’re lucky enough, you might just get to be one of the first astronauts to set foot on the red planet. Pilots, scientists, engineers, you name it, NASA wants you.

“This next group of American space explorers will inspire the Mars generation to reach for new heights, and help us realize the goal of putting boot prints on the Red Planet,” says Charles Bolden, NASA’s administrator (via CNBC).

“This is an exciting time to be a part of America’s human space flight program,” says the director of Flight Operations at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Brian Kelly.

How could you not agree? Making a trip to Mars is just the next step into a world of so much more exploration. Five years ago, I couldn’t even begin to fathom the significance or possibility of having humans making it 34.8 million miles away. Alas, NASA always jumps above my expectations and never fails to make me believe we can do anything.

However, NASA isn’t messing around. They want all the Mars candidates to have at least three years of professional experience, or 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time. So if you qualify, what are you still here for! We need you! With recent reports of Mars no longer having an atmosphere, I’m excited to see what’s next in space news.

Interested? Fill out the application!
