New character names revealed for Power Rangers reboot movie

Back in August, it was reported that the Power Rangers reboot movie would feature the original names of the characters from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series along with some details on their characters. Since then, there has been plenty of “rumored” information being released on the film, including that the movie may take place after the current Power Rangers Dino Charge series, and will see the return of Scorpina as a possible villain.

According to some new information from Collider, the movie has been retitled ‘Saban’s Power Rangers’ in an effort to place co-creator’s Haim Saban name in the title, the original Ranger outfits will make an appearance in the movie at some point, and the film’s budget is relatively low, somewhere in the $35 million range, which shouldn’t be a surprise seeing as the studio went with relatively unknown actors. It does fit with how the series has progressed over the last two decades.

Finally, the names of the rangers have been changed, which means this is a whole new team of Power Rangers. I feel this is a much better move.

Here are the names of the new Rangers:

  • Callum Oliver (played by Dacre Montgomery) – The Red Ranger/Tyrannosaurus
  • Priya Patel (played by Naomi Scott) – The Pink Ranger/Pterodactyl
  • Brian Olson (played by RJ Cyler) – The Blue Ranger/Triceratops
  • Oscar Fernandez (played by Ludi Lin) – The Black Ranger/Mastodon
  • Teyana Jones – The Yellow Ranger/Sabretooth Tiger

There could be more tie-ins with the original Power Rangers series than you think. The new Red Ranger shares the same last name as the original Green Ranger (later White Ranger, Red Zeo Ranger, Red Turbo Ranger and Black Dino Ranger), Tommy Oliver (played by Jason David Frank) so it could be a close relative leading the new rangers. It’s also speculated that the original Zords may appear in the movie in some capacity, even though they were destroyed by Rito Revolto.

Do you think we will see the Green Ranger appear in the movie, or will they wait for a sequel/spin-off TV series?

Saban’s Power Rangers is set to release in theaters on January 13, 2017.
