F. Gary Gray in negotiations to direct ‘Fast & Furious 8’

After both Justin Lin and James Wan passed on directing the 8th installment of the turbo-charged franchise, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Universal has picked on F. Gary Gray to direct Fast & Furious 8. Hot off the success of his film, Straight Outta Compton, F. Gary Gray has been in high-demand including being a contender for the Black Panther gig. Gray was chosen over Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk), Adam Wingard (V/H/S), and William Eubank (Angels & Airwaves: Love).

After the troubled search for a director went public, Vin Diesel took to Facebook multiple times in order to ease fans’ worries about the film. On Monday, Gray met with Diesel who is a key consultant on any major decisions involving the franchise. After their meeting, Diesel posted a picture of himself and Gray in front of numerous Fast & Furious images.

The hiring of Gray will mark the beginning of the end for the franchise as Diesel has stated that 8 will mark the beginning of the final trilogy of the series. “Universal has been so good to me and so trusting of the vision… they have been like family… I promised the studio I would deliver one last Trilogy to end the saga,” he said on his Facebook page. Diesel has also said that the next film will take place in New York City.
