Straight Outta Compton director to helm Marvel’s Black Panther? (Update)

Update: A new report says that F. Gary Gray is locked in for the Fast and Furious 8 movie.

Straight Outta Compton was a big hit at the box office and with critics and moviegoers when it opened in theaters this year. This is definitely good news for F. Gary Gray, who helmed the biopic that made him a hot director right now. He’s so in demand that both Universal and Marvel Studios are eyeing him, according to Variety. He’s in the lead to direct Furious 8, and he’s also on the list of hopefuls for directing Marvel’s Black Panther.

It would seem that Marvel is only looking for black directors to helm Black Panther, but this isn’t the first time Gray was considered for a Marvel film. He was a contender for Captain America: The Winter Soldier but ended up directing Straight Outta Compton. (Still not a bad gig.)

He has told BlackTree TV that he would “love to direct a superhero movie,” so Black Panther could be a possibility.

Ava Duvernay, who directed Selma, was this close to helming the Marvel project, but she left due to creative differences.

Chadwick Boseman will star as T’Challa, aka Black Panther, and the film is expected to hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
