Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S3 E1 ‘Laws of Nature’ Recap

**Caution! The following recap contains spoilers. If you do not want to know what happens before you watch it yourself, turn back now.**

The first episode of the third season of Agents of SHIELD started the season off with a bang!

If you saw the opening last week, or our recap of it, then you know that there was a new Inhuman discovered and a new threat revealed. The team has a new BUS and Skye- sorry, Daisy (having trouble getting used to that) is leading an extraction team for rescuing the new Inhumans.

The excitement didn’t end there. With the increase in Inhumans rising, the team is struggling to stay ahead of the new organization that is also hunting them, led by a woman named Roselyn. She is ex-NASA, ex-MI6, ex-…well you get the idea. Not only is she trying to stay ahead of Coulson and SHIELD, but it turns out they are both hunting another threat. Something that keeps on vaporizing Inhumans.

The increase in the Inhuman occurrences leads Daisy to attempt (apparently not for the first time) to recruit Lincoln on the team. Not only is he also an Inhuman, but also a doctor so he can understand what is going on on a personal and medical level. However, the recruiting party doesn’t go as plan when the vaporizing creature turns up hunting Daisy and/or Lincoln for his next victims. The origins of this creature are unknown, but to me he looks sort of Kree. Between Lincoln and Daisy, they’re able to scare him off and escape, though Lincoln is still not joining SHIELD.

Meanwhile, Fitz is scouring the globe trying to find answers to the mysterious Kree artifact that swallowed Gemma in the season 2 finale. In a daring solo reconnaissance mission, he recovers the clue that he has been searching for during the past months only to discover it simply points to the unthinkable – Gemma is dead. Heartbroken, exhausted, angry Fitz takes a shotgun and breaks into the container holding the rock and resorts to yelling and beating it to no avail.

Lastly, we see the hints of a rekindling romantic relationship between Bobbi and Hunter as Bobbi is still in rehab for her busted knee. Determined not to be off the bench completely, she puts her biology degree to use and helps out in the lab in lieu of Gemma and, most of the time, Fitz. With Hunter determined to track down Ward, Bobbi tries to show she cares for him in case he doesn’t make it back.

The ending cannot be overlooked either. We see Gemma, on some alien world, running for her life from some unknown threat. And then – cut to black.

All in all this was a fantastic episode and brings the series back strong. They continue to throw in references to the MCU – like Sokovia and the incident at Pym Technologies – which is awesome and maintains continuity in the universe though the episode left us with more questions than answers. Where is May? What is Ward up to? Who was that creature hunting the Inhumans? And where the heck is Gemma?! Looks like we will have to wait until next week to find out.

Agents of SHIELD airs on Tuesdays at 9|8c on ABC.
