Death Note started out as a manga, and it has been adapted as a live-action Japanese movie series and an anime series. The live-action US version is currently in the works with Adam Wingard (The Guest, VHS) helming it. Now we have news on who’s going to star in the film. According to Variety, Nat Wolff (Paper Towns) will headline the film and is in final negotiations with Warner Bros.

The manga was written by Tsugumi Ohba and drawn by Takeshi Obata. It follows a detective named L trying to figure out a string of mysterious murders where people are killed off in supernatural ways. The killer? A smart and popular high school student named Light Yagami who found a book that allows him to kill anyone he wants by writing their names down, as long as he remembers how they look.

The site reports that Wolff will be playing the part of the killer high school student. Since this is an American production, the odds of the character’s name being Light Yagami is very slim. As long as his first name is Light, I think it should be fine.

The movie begins production next spring and will be adapted from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater. This may be bad news since he was responsible for co-writing Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four. The movie is being produced by Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka (Heroes).
