Matt Damon admits he turned down role of key superhero

Although The Martian may sound like a comic book, it’s merely a story about a normal man who’s stranded on the red planet. As he was promoting this new film, he told the New York Daily News that he can’t picture himself playing a superhero. Although, based on a few of his comments, there might be hope for the Oscar-winning actor.

“I’d consider it if the right thing came along,” he admitted.

He goes on to describe a specific scenario where this might work out.

“If Chris Nolan came up to me and said, ‘I want to do Daredevil,’ I would be in.”

Once upon a time, he did consider starring in a now infamous movie and often wonders about the role he didn’t take.

“For us it was always ‘Daredevil’ — that’s the comic we read when we were kids,” says Damon. “But when that one came along (in 2003) I chickened out, because I couldn’t tell. I hadn’t seen the director (Mark Steven Johnson’s) work and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘No.’ Ben was like, ‘I gotta do it.’ And the movie ended up doing very well, even though I don’t think Ben was ultimately very proud of it.”

Even though Damon probably won’t be a superhero anytime soon considering that Daredevil has been made into a Netflix series, that doesn’t mean he won’t direct superheroes. Directing is something he hopes to do in the near future and he says he’d be happy to helm one of the big blockbusters.

“Just putting that out there,” he joked.

Despite his lack of super heroics, Damon’s career is doing just fine and early positive reviews of The Martian and its flashy subject matter seem like a recipe for success. The movie hits theaters on October 2, 2015.
