Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition (review)

Disney Infinity 3 - 01

It’s a year later and we have a new Disney Infinity available to us. Some may think Disney is pulling an Activision or Ubisoft by releasing a new Disney Infinity every year, but I’m sure fans and collectors are okay with more figures aside from Marvel and Disney, especially since these are the Star Wars figures we’ve been looking for.

The Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Starter Pack comes with the game disc, a Twilight of the Republic Play Set, Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker figures, and the Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Base. If you want to complete the rest of the “prequel” figures, you can collect the others for $14 each including Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul (coming soon).

The meat of the game in the starter pack is the Twilight of the Republic Play Set. You can use any Star Wars characters here, but if the figures are from Star Wars Rebels or the classic Star Wars, then you’ll need to collect a character coin to unlock them in the game. Judging from this Play Set alone, it already feels bigger and more expansive than the 2.0 Play Sets. You can visit planets like Geonosis, Naboo, Tatooine, and Coruscant.

Of course, the planet that will hit old school fans the hardest is Tatooine. Here you’ll be able to meet with Jabba the Hutt, do a podrace, and just admire the desert planet with its two suns. You’ll also get to relive the Naboo space battle by piloting either an ARC-170, N-1 starfighter, or the Jedi Starfighter. One of the coolest battles is the boss battle with a fan-favorite villain.

Overall the gameplay for the main missions was around 3 to 4 hours. Don’t worry, there are plenty of side missions available to extend the hours. If you want more games, you can wait for the Rise Against the Empire Play Set (classic Star Wars) later this month or get the Toy Box Expansion Games like the Toy Box Takeover or the Toy Box Speedway.

The Toy Box Takeover includes around 3 hours of gameplay and features a top-down view for up to 4 players. The Incredibles’ Syndrome has taken over the Toy Box, and it’s up to you and the rest of the Disney characters to put a stop to him and the villains spanning the Marvel and Star Wars universes.

Fans of the Toy Box should be happy with the new and improved Toy Boy 3.0. Here are the new tools:

  • Path Creator: This allows you to create paths that all types of characters can use. You can use this to create theme park rides, cut scenes, and chases.
  • Toy Dispenser: This is for those who don’t want to unlock them via gameplay, since a random toy will pop out instantly.
  • Music Note Creator: You can now create music by using instruments and toys that create different notes.

If you have played with the Toy Box before, it’s pretty much the same. You can create your own city, jungle or desert. My personal favorite is acquiring different Disney, Marvel or Star Wars skies, since these can change the sky, background and background theme to fit your favorite Disney, Marvel or Star Wars films. For example, if you have the Tron sky activated, you’ll get to hear the soundtrack from the movie along with the neon background. The Death Star sky will have you looking at space, with X-Wings and TIE Fighters flying in the distance as John Williams’ score is playing in the background.

The power discs will once again enhance your experience. You simply place them where the play set on the base is, or on the circle area for the figures. These can give you access to character assists like Mace Windu backing you up, or new vehicles like General Grievous’ Wheel Bike. You can also have more items to use for your Toy Box, like the Skies or Forests of Felucia.

If you enjoy the Disney Infinity style, then you’ll enjoy the new Disney Infinity 3.0 figures including characters like Yoda, Darth Maul, Olaf, Mickey Mouse, Mulan, Sam Flynn and more. The sculpt and paint job are pretty good, and the poses are all unique. Check out some of the figures from Wave 1 below.

Final Reaction

Becoming a Disney Infinity fan is definitely going to hurt your wallet this time around, since the figures cost a bit more than the 1.0 and 2.0 figures; however, it looks like they have slightly improved on the paint job and details. With so many Star Wars characters (and some Disney and a few Marvel ones) to choose from and many different events to relive, you’ll be on a wild and nostalgic adventure. As a gamer, you’ll be let down by the short hours of gameplay. However, it’s not that bad, since the Play Sets aren’t that expensive. For example, the Rise Against the Empire Play Set that includes the Luke and Leia figures is $3. Let’s say you get 4 to 5 hours of gameplay, that’s not bad since you also get two figures included.
