Horror maestro Wes Craven has died at the age of 76

Legendary horror director Wes Craven has died today due to his brain cancer. He was 76.

Although Wes Craven is primarily known for the Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Craven has dealt with a variety of other endeavors. He directed the drama Music of the Heart starring Meryl Streep in her Oscar nominated role and the psychological thriller Red Eye starring Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams.

But Craven will always be known for his horror films and the iconic Freddy Krueger and Ghostface. Craven challenged and innovated the horror genre. The metacinema, film-within-a-film in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare was the first of its kind. Scream also changed the game by evolving the formula for slasher films.

Rest in peace, Wes Craven. Thank you for the nightmares.
