Neil deGrasse Tyson promotes The Martian in new video

If there’s a sure sign that nerd culture is slowly taking over the world, it’s the fact that we are somehow using the words “celebrity” and “astrophysicist” in the same sentence.  But, what else would you call Neil deGrasse Tyson, and his increasing influence in pop culture? To help promote the upcoming release of the highly anticipated Ridley Scott film The Martian, deGrasse Tyson shot a video from the year 2029 that details man’s quest to Mars and the upcoming Ares 3 mission to Mars that will feature astronauts that look surprisingly like Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, and Kate Mara.

In this slickly produced “documentary” clip, deGrasse Tyson talks about the risks the Ares 3 team faces on Mars and wishes them good luck on their mission.  The whole clip feels both authentic and important, and deGrasse Tyson’s authoritative baritone only adds to the polish of the production. As if I wasn’t already excited enough to watch The Martian on opening night, this clip just seals the deal.

The Martian opens in theaters on October 2nd.
