D23 Expo: Orlando Bloom returns in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Will Turner

Pirates of the Caribbean is a franchise that has flourished into something unimaginable, given the origins from which it came from. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has done a more than fantastic job making the unforgettable film series a staple in the Disney playbook. At this year’s D23 Expo, Johnny Depp was inducted as a Disney legend for his work on Pirates, as well as countless other Disney properties. At the live-action presentation, he even came out to greet the audience as his alter-ego, Captain Jack Sparrow. It was only fitting that they would then announce a key character’s return to the series.

Orlando Bloom¬†will be returning to the franchise as the swashbuckling blacksmith,¬†Will Turner. This was great news as I believe there’s a great on-screen chemistry between Jack Sparrow and Turner. The last we saw of him was in a post-credits scene from the third film, At World’s End. In that scene, we see him at the helm of the Flying Dutchman, to which he is now captain. It’s going to be interesting to see how that factors into Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Series regular Geoffrey Rush will be returning as the pragmatic Captain Barbossa. Javier Bardem joins the cast as the new villain, Captain Salazar. I think this is great news having Orlando Bloom back in the mix. He brings a particular balance to all the films opposite Jack Sparrow. I definitely can’t wait to see the film when it releases.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sails into theaters on July 7, 2017.
