D23 Expo: Donnie Yen, Diego Luna and Forest Whitaker join Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Today during Disney’s live-action panel, the house of mouse showed off some of its biggest upcoming feature films that it has been brewing. One the big properties that everyone anxiously has been waiting for was Star Wars, and Disney did not fail to deliver. During the Star Wars panel, the cast of the upcoming Rogue One was revealed. The story follows a group of rebels on a suicide mission to retrieve the plans for the Death Star.

Lead by Felicity Jones, Rogue One stars Donnie Yen (IP Man), Diego Luna (Elysium, Y Tu Mama Tambien), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly, Devils on the Doorstep) and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler). Also joining them will be Casino Royal’s Mads Mikkelsen, Killing Them Softly’s Ben Mendelsohn, Firefly’s Alan Tudyk and Forest Whitaker. This will be the first American film for Jiang Wen. Donnie Yen has been in American films like Blade 2 and Shanghai Knights. Tudyk’s role is said to be all done in performance capture, and at this time it is unclear what role Forest Whitaker will play.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy revealed that “Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films. It will have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”

Principal photography has just begun on the film. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is slated to release December 16, 2016.
