D23 Expo: Bob Iger confirms that Star Wars Land is coming!

Star Wars-Themed Lands Coming to Disney Parks Ð Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced at D23 EXPO 2015 that Star Wars-themed lands will be coming to Disneyland park in Anaheim, Calif., and DisneyÕs Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Fla., creating DisneyÕs largest single-themed land expansions ever at 14-acres each, transporting guests to a never-before-seen planet, a remote trading port and one of the last stops before wild space where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life. These authentic lands will have two signature attractions, including the ability to take the controls of one of the most recognizable ships in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, on a customized secret mission, and an epic Star Wars adventure that puts guests in the middle of a climactic battle. Earlier this week, Star Wars and Disney fans alike were teased at the rumor of a possible Star Wars Land coming to the Disneyland Resort. At today’s live-action film presentation at D23, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Star Wars Land will in fact be coming to both the Anaheim and Orlando Disney parks. This announcement capped off an already phenomenal presentation that included reveals from multiple Marvel and Disney film properties.

Here’s what Iger had to say:

I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the next 60 years of Parks & Resorts than with Star Wars Land. Every restaurant, building, everything will be inhabited by the aliens and droids you’d expect to find there. You’d expect to find a Cantina, and there will be one. You’ll have the chance to run into all the droids and fantastic beasts that Star Wars is known for. You’ll meet characters from The Force Awakens and more from the Star Wars saga.

Hearing this was like a Godsend. With the exception of Star Tours and the Jedi Academy, there hasn’t really been much other integration of Star Wars into Disney parks. Since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, I’ve been hoping that Disney would one day make a specific land dedicated to Star Wars. From what Iger is saying, we’ll have that and more. It looks to be almost a living, breathing Star Wars city.

I GET TO GO ONTO THE MILLENNIUM FALCON AND FLY IT!? The flying part is more of a non-literal sense, as of course you won’t be able to truly pilot it. Nonetheless, it still almost brought me to tears knowing I’ll even get to step foot onto the iconic ship. I’m really interested to see what these “secret missions” are as well.

We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

So not only are we getting a Star Wars Land, but it will be a brand new planet that we haven’t seen in the Star Wars Universe. As if that wasn’t good enough, the sheer size of the new addition will be a staggering 14 acres. It will literally be an entire city. We’ll also bear witness to the conflict between the notorious First Order and the rebel fighters of the Resistance. Who knows what characters we might see running around, and maybe even catch glimpses into future Star Wars films.

This is probably the best news a Star Wars and Disney fan (myself) can get, and I can’t wait to see this project come to fruition. Are you excited at this announcement? Let us know in the comments below.
